The added land will extend the life of the landfill by immeasurable decades, a county official says.
Locked gates will guard the entrance to the long-abandoned former Allenwood Federal Prison Camp, once known as a "country club" that houses such notable federal inmates as G. Gordon Liddy, of Watergate fame.WILLIAMSPORT -- Lycoming County soon will own the land on which it operates a regional landfill and have acreage available for expansion.
That land, which is about 10 miles south of Williamsport along Route 15, will extend the life of the landfill for immeasurable decades, said Jason Yorks, director of resource services. The purchase does not include a cemetery and Christ’s Lutheran Church, commonly known as the Stone Church, that served as a community center for the former village of Alvira and the surrounding area.
Approximately 400 residents, including those in Alvira, were displaced to make room for the Pennsylvania Ordnance Works, a TNT manufacturing plant operated by U.S. Rubber Co. for the government.
