Group of GOP gubernatorial candidates sets unprecedented rules for their participation in debates

Four of the nine candidates seeking the GOP nomination made it clear that they won’t grace a debate stage unless four specific conditions are met – three that deal with the moderator and one with the debate format.

But former Gov. Ed Rendell, who participated in his share of debates over his long storied political career, didn’t consider any of the criterion to be offensive or unreasonable although he said he thought the restriction on the moderator’s political affiliation and residency was a little odd. Barletta campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh said, “Republicans ought to be the ones who control a Republican process to choose the Republican nominee for governor. It’s as simple as that. The media aren’t motivated to select the best candidate to beat [presumed Democratic nominee] Josh Shapiro, but Republicans are.”

Candidate Joe Gale also saw it as a debate-dodging move “especially any debate I’m scheduled to attend because I don’t stick to the script of ‘Democrats bad, Republicans good.’ In truth, both parties are the problem in Harrisburg,” he said.
