Jose Colon pleads guilty after Northumberland County district attorney drops the death penalty.
SUNBURY – A Shamokin man has admitted he killed a woman, assaulted another one and twice shot at police during a five-hour standoff that followed.
Although Colon no longer is facing that sentence, 11 of the charges to which he pleaded carry mandatory minimum sentences of 20 years or 220 years if imposed consecutively. With the exception of answering the judge’s questions that dealt mostly with ensuring the plea was voluntary, he remained silent during the proceeding.Ortiz received a phone call from a woman and she went outside. Another woman who was visiting Ortiz heard arguing and when she went outside, she was hit in the head by Colon, knocking her to the ground.
He was wounded when officers returned fire after Colon fired twice from a window, hitting a police armored vehicle and a cruiser. He expressed confidence there was sufficient evidence to obtain a first-degree murder conviction had the case gone to trial.
