For two years, members took on a mission that included testing people for COVID-19, caring for people in nursing homes and given vaccinations.

In all, about 1,400 guard members took part, with some activated for months at a time, and some activated multiple times. The seven-day average of new deaths fell to 29 as of Monday, down from 183 in late January. Pennsylvania’s total pandemic death toll stood at 44,115 as of Tuesday. Thus the line from a National Guard news release saying the COVID-19 mission has ended “at least for the time being.”— Providing staffing support to 161 long-term care facilities totaling over 16,683 shifts.
