A 21-year-old pre-med student is looking to move forward with her future after pleading in a court case over stabbing her ex.
Earlier in the case, Sobejano failed to appear in court for a prior plea due to what her attorney described as a “deteriorating” mental health situation. She was concerned about the effect a plea would have on her standing as a pre-medical student at Penn, the attorney said.
Sobejano ultimately entered her plea today after the judge in the case signaled he was ready to begin jury selection for trial Tuesday afternoon. The case began with Sobejano’s ex-boyfriend, Samuel Parente, reporting a stabbing at a Harveys Lake boathouse the afternoon of June 15, 2020, the newspaper writes. The incident came after Sobejano informed Parente she was pregnant and said she wanted to discuss it, prosecutors said.
Parente, who told police he had been trying to end the relationship, agreed to meet up with Sobejano, who then plunged a paring knife into his neck inside the boathouse, according to prosecutors. Despite the plea, Sobejano is still contesting $16,303 in restitution she has been ordered to pay for DNA testing related to the case. That issue is to be addressed at a separate hearing on a later date, the newspaper reported. The pre-medical student accused of stabbing her ex-boyfriend in the neck during a dispute about her purported pregnancy pleaded no contest to a felony count of aggravated assault on the brink of trial Tuesday afternoon.
