says her chickens provide emotional support for her and her family; however, borough officials say she may not keep the animals at her home.
The Wind Gap Zoning Hearing Board unanimously denied a variance request last week for Richard Smith, who owns property on Alpha Road. Judi Wright, who lives on the property, has 15 chickens in a pen at the home. Smith received a violation notice from the borough zoning officer.“We talked to the neighbors and they do not have a problem,” Wright said. “The chickens are not a nuisance.”
Wright said she suffers from depression and she has grandchildren who have been diagnosed with autism. Teaching her grandchildren how to care for the chickens works wonderfully as therapy for all involved, Wright said.The borough ordinances allow for pets such as dogs, cats and canaries, but fowl like chickens, ducks, turkeys and large animals like cows and horses are not permitted.
Wright said she thinks the borough should make a distinction between commercial farming operations and people who own animals as pets.
