But the conference still seemingly has an ally within college football — and he’s arguably the most influential person in the sport.In the 12-team format scheduled for implementation as early as the 2024 season , the Pac-12 champion would be all but guaranteed a berth. Regular appearances would boost interest in the postseason across the western third of the country.
At the highest level, the sport is consolidating around the SEC specifically and the southeastern region of the country generally. Clemson owns as many berths as the Big 12 and Pac-12 combined. Commissioner George Kliavkoff had concerns about the long-term revenue-sharing formula and the role of the Rose Bowl.
