Anthony Albanese is seeking to lock in support for a far-ranging policing pact designed to counter China’s growing security presence in the region.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing pushback from Pacific leaders as Australia seeks to lock in support for a far-ranging policing pact designed to counter China’s growing security presence in the region.
There are concerns among some Pacific leaders, however, that the initiative will be perceived as anti-China and create the perception they are picking sides in the great power battle playing out between China and the United States.Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Charlot Salwai told fellow Pacific leaders on Tuesday that “we need to make sure that this is framed to fit our purposes and not developed to suit the geostrategic interests and geostrategic denial security postures of our big partners”.
Tonga’s Police Commissioner Shane McLennan, the chairman of the Pacific Chiefs of Police, has enthusiastically backed the initiative, as have Pacific leaders including Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
