A Sydney council has proposed adding seven hotels as “heritage items” to a local environmental plan | smh_andrew

Pub owners in inner-city Paddington are split over plans to heritage list seven of the suburb's historic watering holes.

The proposal comes as Mr Clarke unveiled plans to create a museum of Australian pub history, folklore and stories at the Imperial Hotel. The Australian Pub and Beer Museum would occupy the upper floors of the hotel, while a bar and restaurant would continue to operate from the ground floor. “It is an entire urban form that has been protected from unsympathetic development, and this includes its churches, shops, schools and of course pubs,” he said.

“Parking is limited in the area, the hotel does not have poker machines, consumption of alcohol is down in general as people are not supporting pubs,” he wrote in an email to the council. “We feel there is little risk in maintaining heritage,” he said. “If anything it provides consistency and stability to the community and protects the important and colourful history of Paddington.”
