Paddington Bear toys have popped up at tributes to Queen Elizabeth II outside royal palaces, but they aren’t entirely welcome among officials

LONDON—They have come with flowers, cards, Paddington Bears and marmalade sandwiches.

was solidified during the queen’s Platinum Jubilee when the pair took part in a skit broadcast before a concert at Buckingham Palace to mark her 70 years on the throne in June.Paddington Bear is seen at Buckingham Palace taking tea with the queen, drinking from the spout of the royal teapot and offering the monarch a marmalade sandwich from under his trademark hat.

On Saturday, a young girl offered Prince William, the new Prince of Wales, a Paddington toy while he was greeting well-wishers on a walk in Windsor. He took the toy and said he might give to his children, before handing it to an aide. Among other offerings were marmalade sandwiches packed in see-through sandwich bags, some marked with “For Later.” Hand-drawn images of the queen and Paddington hand in hand disappearing over the horizon were also left in her honor.

The Peruvian bear—the creation of British author Michael Bond—and the queen have a longer history. In ‘Paddington at the Palace’ the bear and his friend Mr. Gruber visit the gates of Buckingham Palace to see the Changing of the Guard, but Paddington is too short to see the soldiers and gets trampled by the crowd, one of whom mistakes him for a soldier’s busby, a fur headdress. “I’m not a busby, I’m a bear!” Paddington says.
