Padres rookie Jose Azocar didn't truly learn to steal bases until last year at Double-A San Antonio; he went 17-for-20 later that summer at Triple-A El Paso
Buck Farmer threw to first base in the eighth inning Monday, to check on Jose Azocar, before throwing a second pitch to Austin Nola. Azocar was off to second base on the next pitch, which was fouled straight back, and again when the Reds reliever was ahead, 1-2, in the count.
It’s the kind of thought process that was relatively new to Azocar when the Padres signed him as a minor league free agent before the 2021 season. “For me, it’s be aware of the move of the pitcher before you get on the field,” Azocar said. “You get the iPad and see the moves and then in game you’ll be prepared for the situation all the time.”
