Several pitchers in camp can earn chance to start for Padres in 2023, but team also keeping eye on outside options
Drew Pomeranz has been among the best relievers in the major leagues when he is healthy.
He simply has not been healthy all that much since rejoining the Padres on a four-year contract before the 2020 season. The team expects the left-hander, who did not pitch last season following flexor tendon surgery in August 2021, to be ready by opening day. But manager Bob Melvin said Monday that Pomeranz will likely be limited at the start of spring training.“I wouldn’t say he’s on a program where he’s completely a ‘go’ like everybody else,” Melvin said. “That could happen at some point in time early in camp. But there’s still probably some restrictions on him.
There are those in the organization that believe the Padres need another starting pitcher with a history of eating innings. Others believe they have the organizational depth to forge ahead without any additions. “Plan A” seems to be to work through at least the early portion of spring training games and see where
