Acquired during the Padres' trade deadline derby, Brandon Drury had just two minor league offers before breakout with Reds

Designated for assignment 49 plate appearances into a trying 2020 season , Brandon Drury actually believed he was on his way to righting himself last year. The Mets just did not give him the at-bats to prove it and the four home runs and .274/.335/.520 batting line he amassed over 88 plate appearances wasn’t significant enough to make the 29-year-old Drury a priority when the lockout lifted in March. But when the dust settled, he had just two minor league offers — from the Reds and Angels.

More than that, Drury woke up Tuesday sitting nearly 20 games below .500 as a member of the cost-cutting Reds. “I’m excited,” Drury said. “It’s what it’s about, winning a championship. So to come to a team as special as this team, it’s an honor to be here and I can’t wait to get going.” The hitter that he is now, too, has undergone a bit of a philosophical change. It’s not that he’s against analytics, per se. There’s just some guys that thrive with deep dives into the numbers and there’s others who get lost in the weeds.
