Dinelson Lamet confident in slider as he return from minor league assignment; Craig Stammen hits injured list with shoulder inflammation
The smile on Dinelson Lamet’s face as he walked through the Petco Park clubhouse Saturday afternoon matched the one he wore while bouncing through El Paso’s dugout last month. As “humbling” as it was to drop down to the minors, as Padres manager Bob Melvin put it, the 29-year-old Dominican understood there was work to be done.
Lamet had a 9.72 ERA when he was optioned off the roster. Yet instead of heading directly to the minors, the consistency of his work out of the bullpen was a focus as he remained with the major league coaching staff for a week before reporting to Double-A San Antonio.
Between the two stops, Lamet struck out 24 batters against six walks in 16 2/3 innings, largely in one- to two-inning bursts. He was especially effective as he moved to the hitter-friendly Triple-A Pacific Coast League, holding hitters to a .211 batting average while fanning 15 in 9 2/3 innings .
