Nick Martinez has been too effective to move out of bullpen for the time being; CJ Abrams has sore biceps

Martinez has not started since June 18 and has made seven straight relief appearances. The first three of those were multiple-inning outings. But he has thrown no more than one inning and no more than 20 pitches since July 8. He has also tapered his preparation in the bullpen before entering games in order to be fresher and possibly be available more frequently.

Martinez has a 1.93 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in 23 1/3 innings out of the bullpen. He has stranded five of six inherited runners.Martinez has handled the eighth inning in two of the Padres’ past three victories, protecting a two-run lead in the first of those and a three-run lead Friday night. Regular eighth-inning man Luis Garcia was available for both games but Melvin felt better about Martinez facing the left-handed batters that were due up in those games.

Said Martinez: “I don’t know what my role is, but seems like just kind of be ready. I’m just going out there and trying to stay aggressive and pump the zone and treat it like any other outing.” “It’s more we haven’t been great defensively as a whole, so it probably shows up a little bit everywhere,” Melvin said.
