Sticking with Grisham at lead-off spot shows signs of paying off; Javy Guerra traded to Rays for money

Eric Hosmer has credited Melvin with expressing his confidence in him in the midst of the Padres front office’s efforts to trade him. Wil Myers spoke of Melvin talking to him after Myers was lifted for a pinch-hitter with the bases loaded in the ninth inning. Ha-seong Kim takes solace in Melvin assuring him he will play more this season than last even as he has started just four of the first six games.

Because Melvin has been open about his thinking, Grisham reiterated, he had established trust and did not owe his player any explanation. “I’m going to stick with him here for a little bit,” Melvin said Friday afternoon. “… I don’t want to pull the plug on Trent right now. For me, it’s only going to take an at-bat or two to get him going in the right direction.”

Already, though, having Melvin stick with him has spoken to Grisham, who last season under Jayce Tingler was for various reasons bounced around the batting order like a lottery ball.
