Ryan Weathers back from minors to start Sunday as Padres look to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Dodgers

is happy to help out a bullpen if that’s what the Padres need. He’s also not quite sure why it takes him an inning or two to really get going — he was 91 mph on the first pitch of his last start and 97 mph on his last, he said — and therefore, quite frankly, is not a true “bullpen guy.”

It is with that understanding that the 23-year-old left-hander took last month’s move to Triple-A El Paso in stride.“I knew it was in the best interest for me and the team,” Weathers said Saturday afternoon. “It was a real good conversation. It wasn’t like a performance standpoint or a demotion of any sort. Just at the time, the team really needed some length and for me and my career it was better for me to get more regular innings.

In the midst of playing nine straight games, the Padres will go with a sixth starter at least this turn through the rotation, an idea that was on the radar when Weathers was initially sent to Triple-A El Paso despite carrying a 2.50 ERA through his first 18 innings in the majors this year. At that point, Weathers had started three games before moving to the bullpen to throw a pair of scoreless frames.had also been moved to the bullpen, meaning the Padres would be in need of someone with some length at some point andThat left Weathers with clear marching orders as he packed his bags for the Pacific Coast League last month: Build up and stay ready in case you’re needed against a team like, say, a division rival that’s suddenly built a six-game lead over the Padres in the division.

“It’s nice that they trust me when the ball’s in my hand whenever,” said Weathers, who threw 56 pitches in his last start and eight scoreless innings across two appearances with El Paso. “It’s fun pitching against these guys and coming back and facing a really good team. I’m excited. Ready to rock and roll.”
