Seidler explains why he takes risks, doesn't bother himself with other owners being bothered by his team's spending
When the speeches were over in the Padres clubhouse Tuesday morning, after Bob Melvin had emphatically declared the World Series is this season’s aim and Peter Seidler had expressed his optimism, a guy who has seen and done some things in baseball immediately approached the Padres’ Chairman.
But then it isn’t that simple, because 65 years after his grandfather helped bring Major League Baseball to California by moving the Dodgers from Brooklyn, Seidler is doing something radical as well.The Padres’ projected $251 million payroll is third highest in the major leagues behind only the two New York clubs. The last “small-market” team to be ranked in the top 5 was Detroit in 2014.on the wisdom and sustainability of that.
Seidler spent more than 10 minutes Tuesday morning answering questions about where the Padres are and where he thinks they are headed. Much of the questioning centered around their recent spending and what other people in baseball think about it. It was just last week that Manfred acknowledged there is some curiosity regarding the Padres’ approach. After complimenting them on their record revenue generation, he said, “The trick for all smaller-market teams has always been sustainability.”in payroll just five times and were never higher than 16in that span, have in the past four years awarded three of the 13 largest active contracts in MLB history.
