Padres are playing Jose Azocar in right field against lefties; Brent Rooker optioned to El Paso as Mike Clevinger activated to start finale against Brewers
Azocar has hits in his last three games as he went 1-for-3 in a start on Saturday against Brewers left-hander Aaron Ashby. He entered Thursday’s and Friday’s games in place of Nomar Mazara after the Brewers brought left-handers out of the bullpen.Azocar was 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored Thursday and 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored Friday.
His .277 batting average would rank third on the Padres behind Manny Machado and Eric Hosmer if he had enough bats to qualify.Mazara is 1-for-4 since joining the Padres, while outfielder Brent Rooker did not appear in a game before the Padres optioned him back to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday to activate Mike Clevinger off the injured list to make Sunday’s start.Jurickson Profar is in left field and leading off for the 10straight game. He is hitting .308/.342/.
Trent Grisham is starting in a ninth straight game in center field, hitting .280/.419/.600 with two doubles and two homers in that stretch. For the Brewers, Christian Yelich is back in the lineup in left field after sitting Saturday. The former NL MVP is hitting just .223/.315/.368 with five homers to start 2022.
