Despite having seven children he told prison officers he had 'no family'

A paedophile who impregnated a young girl and was jailed to protect the public died in prison after refusing cancer treatment.

In June 2020 prison staff applied to allow McEllin, then aged 72, to be released from jail but as he reported having no family, and with no places available at approved premises, the application was refused by the governor and McEllin's offender manager. McEllin told doctors that if they could not cure his cancer then he did not want to undergo any treatment and he died in September 2020 after suffering a stroke.

"He was registered blind, a wheelchair user and had a history of heart disease, stroke and a heart attack. On 11 May, a prison GP examined Mr McEllin for shortness of breath. Following an abnormal ECG , she sent Mr McEllin to hospital by emergency ambulance, where a chest X-ray showed signs oflung cancer.

"In June, the hospital investigated the extent of Mr McEllin’s cancer, but the results were inconclusive. On 6 July, Mr McEllin told a hospital consultant that if they could not cure his cancer, he did not want life-prolonging treatment and he signed a do not resuscitate order.
