'Absolute double standards' being seen on restrictions and protests: Canavan | Sky News AustraliaNationals Senator Matt Canavan says there is an 'absolute double standard' being exhibited by state premiers who ban Australians going to the footy due to coronavirus concerns but are 'all sweet' with allowing Black Lives Matter protests. \n\nAs many as 50,000 people are expected to attend Black Lives Matter protests in Victoria on Saturday and thousands more are expected in Sydney on the same day in widespread rallies. \n\nVictoria’s mass gathering laws are restricted to a maximum of 20 people but state police have refrained from declaring the event illegal, while social distancing regulations will remain in place.\n\n'I don't know what state premiers are doing here, they're certainly being inconsistent,' Mr Canavan told Sky News host Peter Gleeson. \n\n'If you can't go to the footy, if you can't go to concerts, if you can't even go to church in big numbers at least ... why is it okay to get out on the streets and protest'. \n\n'There's an absolute double standard here'. \n \n'Sure I agree with the NSW Premier (Gladys Berejiklian) there's a right to protest in this country, but there's a right to express your religion freely too and that right has been circumscribed by the public health implications of COVID.\n\n'So I don't see why this other right should similarly not be circumscribed if that's what is needed to fight this virus.\n\n'We just ask people to be consistent ... it's absolutely absurd.' \n\nimage: Getty

Media and Democrats ‘clearly overreached in their anti-Trump obsession’ | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Chris Kenny says the media and Democrats have clearly “overreached in their anti-Trump obsession” as the fallout of the death of George Floyd gets evermore political. \n\nMr Kenny said it has been an “shocking” 10 days within the United States following the death of unarmed African-American man George Floyd while in police custody. \n\n“The racial tensions have been heartbreaking, and the lawlessness has been sickening”. \n\nHowever, he said the fallout of Mr Floyd’s death, which has seen widespread protesting, looting, violence, deaths and arrests, the focus is now shifting to President Trump.\n\n“Most of the media are intent on making this all about Trump, even when the issue has always been primarily one about city and state law enforcement methods, and mostly in Democrat controlled cities and states”. \n\n“The polarisation over this is issue so extreme, and the focus on Trump from his political enemies and the media is so obsessive that they don't really want to hear from him”. \n\nHe also said a “new flashpoint” is begging to emerge “with protesters and activists now demanding the defunding of police” in the country, a move which is winning support within some circles. \n\nHe said the media has continued to play “the same old anti-Trump games they always do”. \n\n“Here we are in an election year, and law and order is now going to be a major issue, and it looks to me like the Democrats are getting onto the wrong side of it”.\n\nImage: AP \n
