Sarah Ferguson presents Australia's premier daily current affairs program, delivering agenda-setting public affairs journalism and interviews that hold the powerful to account. Plus political analysis from Laura Tingle.

SARAH FERGUSON: What is your understanding of what is going on in the peace talks in Cairo? Is a formal pause in the fighting still possible?

MAJED BAMYA: We are saying that there needs to be a ceasefire. That kind of conditionality that makes a ceasefire agreement, whatever that conditionality is, is not helpful. SARAH FERGUSON: I will come to that vote in just a minute, but I just want to stay with that question for a moment. Are you also asking for Hamas to take responsibility and for the leadership, the military leadership to depart from Gaza?

SARAH FERGUSON: But to be clear, there are direct conversations taking place between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas about the future? We have had a division now for several years, that we are trying to resolve, and we have also said that we support a ceasefire agreement and we have called on Hamas to do so and it has done so in the last few days, and we have welcomed its approval over a ceasefire agreement, and we have been clear that the only way forward is peace, is the two-state solution...

SARAH FERGUSON: Talking about Australia, are you urging Australia directly, are you speaking to the Australian representatives directly about supporting this vote? MAJED BAMYA: That is pretty much all. That is for them to decide, but I can tell you we are hopeful they will be in a position to support alongside the overwhelming majority of the international community.

MAJED BAMYA: So, this is the first vote on our membership that we are bringing forward to the general assembly, after the very wide support in the Security Council, but there was a veto that prevented a favourable recommendation of the council, so Australia has been outspoken on its support to Palestinian rights and the two-state solution and we hope that they will vote in a coherent manner with this position by supporting the resolution.
