Mining magnate Clive Palmer has launched a High Court challenge against the Commonwealth Electoral Act in a long-shot bid to re-register his United Australia Party ahead of the next federal election.

Mining magnate Clive Palmer has launched a legal challenge to Australian election law, as he aims to re-register his United Australia Party before the nation heads to the polls next year.

Mr Palmer, who briefly served as the member for Fairfax - on the Sunshine Coast - from 2013 to 2016, voluntarily deregistered the UAP in September 2022, a move which caught his only sitting member off-guard. Picture: Brad Fleet "Surely all Australians, regardless of their political persuasion, should be allowed to stand for elections, as should all political parties."

He also claimed on Thursday the Albanese government was attempting to"rig" the 2025 vote by preventing the UAP from participating. "Without commenting on any specific party registration application, it is accurate to say that the Commonwealth Electoral Act prevents a political party from voluntarily deregistering itself and then re-registering before the next federal election," the spokesperson said.
