A pamphlet against women’s suffrage in the 1910s has been used criticise the No campaign — as it was featured on a viral TikTok that has swayed some vote less than two weeks out from the Voice to parliament referendum.
The pamphlet, which was shared in a video by Yes supporter and Victorian Trades Hall Council assistant secretary Wil Stracke, was originally published by the National Association in the US.
“Conservatives always reach for exactly the same play book whenever they want to oppose any change no matter how small,” she said.“Because 90 per cent of the women either do not want it, or do not care.“Because 80 per cent of the women eligible to vote are married and can only double or annul their husband’s votes.“Because in some states more voting women than voting men will place the government under petticoat rule. The pamphlet was released in the US in 1910s.
“They also said it would be far too expensive, women would be far too powerful and that it was far too risky. Any of that sound familiar?” In the video, Ms Stracke argued an Indigenous Voice to Parliament “would help address the gap between First Nations and everyone else”.
