Extreme poverty in Australia's immediate region is set to skyrocket as the economic fallout from the coronavirus outbreak reverses decades of progress among the world’s most disadvantaged communities.
“Indonesia has made huge progress at reducing extreme poverty but a large share of the population still lives just above the poverty line and are vulnerable to falling back,” he said.Hoy estimates a 10 per cent contraction in income per person in Indonesia would increase the share of people in extreme poverty by 50 per cent, while a 20 per cent contraction in income per person would more than double the share of people in extreme poverty.
It is in Australia’s interests to assist developing countries respond to the health emergency and its long-term economic fallout, he said.
