Despite increased psychological distress, a major new report showed the pandemic has not led to an increase in deaths by suicide in Australia.

Excess mortality – the difference between the number of deaths and the expected number based on previous trends – dropped in 2020 and 2021, but in the first two months of 2022, excess deaths were 3105 higher than expected. Despite a drop in risky drinking, the report identified harmful levels of alcohol consumption as a major health issue. Drinking is associated with increased risk of chronic conditions, injury and premature death.In 2019, 77 per cent of the population aged 14 and older had consumed a full serve of alcohol in the previous 12 months, while the trend for single occasion risky drinking of at least four standard serves fell from nearly 30 per cent to 24.8 per cent.
AIHW deputy chief executive Matthew James said Australia fared well compared with most countries during the first two years of the pandemic. “Young Australians are still at the highest risk of suffering the worst mental and wellbeing effects of COVID-19,” co-author Nicholas Biddle said.
