Pandemic gives Arthur Sinodinos 'baptism of fire' as US ambassador KnottMatthew

When Arthur Sinodinos began his posting as Australia's ambassador to the United States at the start of February, Australians were still consumed by the bushfires that had ravaged the country throughout summer.

He replaced former treasurer Joe Hockey in what is regarded as Australia's most prestigious and important diplomatic posting. "Then the virus erupts and we're thrown into the deep end of helping Australians who want to get home, giving advice to people who are staying in the US, dealing with Australians who are caught on cruise ships and can't get off."

Instead, the pandemic forced him to hunker down in his residence. Phone calls and video-conferencing sessions have had to suffice as a way to build connections with the Trump administration. When the outbreak is under control and normal life resumes, Sinodinos is looking forward to travelling outside the Washington beltway, including to manufacturing hubs in the US Midwest.
