Sir Julius died peacefully at his home in Huris, New Ireland province, where he had served as governor since 2007. He was widely recognized as 'one of the last founding fathers' following the deaths of other independence leaders, including PNG's first prime minister, Sir Michael Somare.
Sir Julius's illustrious political career spanned decades, marked by two terms as prime minister. His first term commenced in 1980 after he successfully ousted Sir Michael in a vote of no confidence. He also held significant ministerial positions, including deputy prime minister and finance minister, during which he played a pivotal role in shaping PNG's modern-day economy.In a heartfelt statement, Sir Julius's wife and children expressed their gratitude to those who supported him throughout his political journey, from the pre-independence era to his passing. They hailed him as a political icon who transcended generations, leaving an indelible mark on the nation's history and the hearts of many. PNG Prime Minister James Marape acknowledged the profound loss, describing it as a somber day for the country. Sir Julius was born in 1939 on Tangar Island, off the east coast of New Britain island, to a migrant Chinese father and indigenous PNG mother. His political life was not without controversy. In 1997, he resigned following a dispute over a $US36 million deal with UK-based private military company Sandline International. The move triggered international condemnation and a heated conflict with the then-head of the PNG defence force, Jerry Singirok. Sir Julius later revealed that he had sought military assistance from the Australian government during the crisis but was denied. He is survived by his wife, Stella, and their four children: Vanessa, Byron, Mark, and Toea, named after the PNG currency that Sir Julius played a role in establishing. His death occurred hours before an event to unveil PNG's 50th Anniversary logo and theme, in anticipation of the golden jubilee on September 16.
