NSW Ambulance Inspector Dominic Wong says four people injured when a lightning strike hit a tree under which they were sheltering in Sydney on Monday are lucky to be alive. The group was taken to hospital on Monday after a lightning strike hit a tree in the Botanic Gardens near the Sydney Opera House at about 12.

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: NSW Ambulance Dominic Wong shares update on four people taken to hospital after lightning strike in Sydney’s Botanic Gardens A man in his late teens and a woman in her 20s were taken to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, while a man and woman aged in their 30s were later taken to St Vincent’s Hospital. “When our paramedics arrived yesterday at the scene, the scene was still heavily impacted by the thunderstorm,” Wong told Sunrise on Tuesday. “We had four patients, all with major trauma from this lightning strike — they all had a brief level of consciousness lost, and they were suffering burns, as well as elevated heart rate,” he added. Wong then gave an update on the patient’s condition. “From what we understand, they stayed at hospital overnight under observation, and they’re making good progress,” Wong said. “They’re in a stable condition.” Wong explained how the traumatic event happened. “From what we understand, these few patients were sheltering under the tree,” he said. “There weren’t other areas unfortunately that they could have shelter. From what I understand, the lightning struck the tree and those in close vicinity were severely affected by the current.” Wong said the patients were lucky it wasn’t immediately fatal, as has been the case in the past. “Past incidents, many of these lightning electrocutions have a fatal outcome, immediate fatal outcome. “It’s a rarity all patients got struck in the one hit, and it’s also rare that they all survived this event.” On Monday, Sydney was battered by wild weather, with rain and thunderstorms sparking mass outages, across the city. There were 20 unplanned outages reported on AusGrid, with 11,306 sites affected, as of 3pm. In Baulkham Hills, Fire and Rescue NSW were called to a house fire following a lightning strike about 2.20pm. Sydney is set to endure a wet week, with showers forecast into the weekend.
