Paramedics in NSW to strike despite Premier’s plea to ‘wait for budget’ | LucyCormack
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has tried to avert paramedics taking unauthorised industrial action over a pay dispute on Thursday insisting the state budget will deliver a package for workers.
About 1000 paramedics will participate in the action for 24 hours, by refusing to respond to any call-outs that do not require lights and sirens. Call-outs for serious conditions like heart attacks, strokes, spinal injuries or asthma attacks will not be affected. “Why would we wait until a budget is printed, and then see what scraps come off the table?” Mr Hayes said.“Once a budget is printed, I don’t think it’s open to negotiation then. Now is the time in a budget build up to be able to put it forward”.The HSU made the call to back the workers in the action after fronting the Industrial Relations Commission on Wednesday afternoon, where an order was made to refrain from any strike or industrial action.“We got through COVID because of the paramedics ...
“We are in the absurd situation where NSW is spending millions to train paramedics but is losing them to other states because we have the lowest paramedic pay in the country,” Mr Hayes said.“The offer currently on the table does not even keep up with the cost of living. With inflation forecast at 2.2 per cent, we are looking at a pay cut. That is unacceptable.”
