A New South Wales family of eight are struggling to make ends meet after the father, Robert Miller, 34, had an aneurysm that was initially believed to be food poisoning. Miller has been unable to work after surgery last month, leaving his partner, Kerrieann James as the sole income earner. “We’re both casual workers … $435 per week … we’re just managing, I pulled some money from my superannuation to cover us for a bit,” James said.

Miller stayed in hospital for 11 days, then had to remain in Adelaide for two weeks before the family came back to Broken Hill. The 34-year-old has weaknesses through the right-side of his body and some memory loss. James said on the night Miller initially experienced symptoms, he was looking after their six children at home and trying to repair a front door. Doctors believe stress led to swelling of a blood vessel known as an aneurysm.
