The parent of a Mountain Lakes High School student has filed suit in U.S. District Court, alleging that district officials led discussions of anti-racism, white privilege, and systemic injustice, which discriminated against his white son.

The suit, filed June 6, claims the district engaged in a campaign of racial discrimination and forced political ideology onto its students, violating their civil rights and creating a hostile educational environment. It claims the plaintiff’s son “was damaged in his constitutional and statutory rights not to be discriminated against based on his race or the color of his skin.”

The parent, identified in court documents as B.L., and another parent brought their concerns to school leaders, who ignored and rejected them, according to the suit.“It is unfortunate that we live in a time when holding our public institutions accountable is met in our community — and our country — by intimidation and personal attacks,” he said in the statement published on InsiderNJ, which first published.

Superintendent Michael Featherman declined to comment on specific charges in the case, saying, “We’re not giving this thing any oxygen at this point.” A call to the district’s lawyer was not immediately returned.“I provided my students and parents with resources for them to be able to have conversations with their children about such a traumatic event they witnessed, home alone,” he said in a phone interview, noting that they were not attending in-person because of the pandemic.

“I find the complaint is not honest,” he said. “It’s not something that should be taken seriously by the courts.” Sanchez left the district at the end of June 2020 to become principal of Columbia High School in Maplewood. “I do feel bad for the community of Mountain Lakes,” he said. “I hope this lawsuit doesn’t sully its reputation.”
