Canberra's Evatt Primary School opens its own cafe to strengthen child-parent relationships and improve literacy.
A cup of coffee and a good book can be a nice way to start the day, and one Canberra primary school has made it a morning ritual in a bid to strengthen child-parent relationships and improve literacy.
"We're trying to build a space where parents can spend a little bit more time with their kids," principal Michael Hatswell said."If we can find and build a space where parents can spend 10 minutes a day with their kids — the kids are being educated and continuing to build that relationship with their parents through reading a book — how great for them and how great for us too because we're able to forge and foster those relationships here at the school.
"The feedback [from parents] has been fantastic: they love that it's a warm relaxed feel and they feel very invited and a great sense of belonging as part of the Evatt school community," he said. Neill Taylor is one parent who has been relishing the opportunity to come into the school each morning and read with his daughter, Imogen.
