Hours after Brisbane 2032 Games boss Andrew Liveris pleaded with politicians not to make it a political football, they did.
The Queensland government is yet to commission a business case for the widely scrutinised decision to build a temporary stadium as the centrepiece for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.
Initially, the Gabba stadium near Brisbane’s CBD was selected as the centrepiece venue. But an eventual cost projection of $3.4 billion to demolish and rebuild the cricket and football stadium was viewed as excessive amid diminishing public support and voter backlash. That brought an incredulous response from deputy Opposition leader Jarrod Bleijie, whose Liberal-National Party has vowed to review the Games’ venues if it forms government after the October state election.“Why would the project validation report or due diligence not have occurred by the department to make recommendations to government before the announcement was made?” he asked during budget estimates.
