Australia’s first opportunities to win gold have arrived just hours after a spectacular opening ceremony in Paris. Follow live.
Bonsoir!I’m at the diving at the Paris Aquatics Centre here in the northern suburbs of Paris, where Belle Smith and Maddison Keeney could win our first medal of the Games in a few hours time.Melbourne-born Smith, 31, and Brisbane-based Maddison Keeney, 28, are strong contenders in the women’s synchronised 3m springboard diving.They won bronze in 2016 and silver at the world championships in Doha earlier this year.
They also won gold at the 2024 French Open, which doubled as the Olympic test event at the new Aquatics Centre – one of only two new purpose-built venues at these Games.From today a total of 136 divers, with an equal distribution between male and female athletes, will compete in eight medal events. Australian will be a part of six of them.Diving made its Olympic debut at the St Louis Games of 1904.
