The French government on Monday sacked the Paris police chief and vowed to crack down harder on Yellow Jacket protesters after a resurgence of violence in weekend demonstrations

"[Law enforcement] strategy was not correctly carried out, and there were failings in the way operations were carried out," Philippe said in a televised statement. The Yellow Jacket movement initially forced Macron to backtrack on the fuel tax that spurred the protests and to introduce a range of other economic measures meant to placate the demonstrators. Despite those concessions, protests have continued with varying levels of participation and violence.
