The first passenger services have commenced on the new Parramatta light rail, marking a significant milestone for Western Sydney. Residents and visitors alike celebrated the occasion, eager to experience this new mode of transport.
The first passenger services departed Carlingford and Westmead light rail stops at 5am and Parramatta Square at 5:02am. Stage two construction of the Parramatta light rail project will begin in 2025, which will add another 10 kilometres of track to extend it to Sydney Olympic Park. In the early hours of Friday morning, dozens of people huddled in Parramatta Square as the first light rail service trundled to a stop.
'We live in Parramatta, and it's just a moment in history so we just wanted to be part of it,' said Yuni Rashid, who was on the 5:02am service with her two children and her husband. Patrick Riakos and his eight-year-old son Adam took an Uber from their home in Alexandria this morning to witness the moment. 'My son really loves transport, trains and trams, so we thought we'd come and get the very first service,' Mr Riakos said. Miranda Payne and her daughter Emily live close by and said they will use the service multiple times a week.'We'll use it to get into Parramatta, to Westmead, hospital visits and things like that'. Miranda and Emily Payne, who live north of Parramatta, braved the early morning to be one of the first passengers on board the Parramatta light rail. On Wednesday afternoon, the NSW government confirmed that the light rail had received accreditation from the Office of the National Safety Regulator to start operating. Completion of stage one of the project, which cost more than $2.875 billion, has been a long time coming.
