The Herald's View: Parties must lay out policies on harbour crossing tolls
Boasting more than a dozen toll roads, Sydney is the unquestioned toll road capital of Australia, and the burden this places on motorists has been a hot political issue for decades.
The argument about what to charge on which roads is likely to grow more intense in coming months as motorists feel the impact of rising petrol prices.Given the difficulty of breaking existing contracts, both parties are looking at the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour Tunnel, whose 30-year contract expires at the end of August, and the plans for new toll roads such as the Western Harbour Tunnel from Cammeray to Rozelle which the state government has said could open by 2028.
The Perrottet government on Thursday left open the option of extending tolls on the Harbour Tunnel but it might be tempted to dodge the issue by simply delaying a decision on any of the new toll arrangements until after the election.
