Julie Mar says she has sometimes gone without buying groceries to fund her husband's partner visa. A solicitor says the application process can cost upwards of $9,000.

Julie Mar and Niroj Adhikari have been married for three years but they live 9,000 kilometres apart in two different countries.

The day after the couple tied the knot in January 2022, Julie had to return home to Sydney to prepare for a move to Broken Hill for work.Julie loves her life in Far West New South Wales, working as a music teacher at a Broken Hill high school and performing at pubs as part of a rock band called Tha Boiz.
