Farah Priela, a California school teacher, was exploring Queensland's north coast when she boarded the Greyhound service to begin her journey back to America.

A passenger onboard a Greyhound bus involved in a triple-fatal crash in Queensland says she thought she was going to die in the tragedy.

The crash occurred on a stretch of the Bruce Highway 8 kilometres north of the town of Gumlu, between Bowen and Townsville, about 11am on Sunday, when the bus carrying 33 people collided with a caravan being towed by a southbound 4WD."It was going up and down, and then we hit the track and it stopped at a complete halt.Ms Priela recalled how the occupants of the 4WD raced to help the bus passengers.

In the days that have followed, she has experienced insomnia and has been overwhelmed by thoughts of the crash."I said what about the other passengers? It could have been me."As the teacher embarks on her trip home to America, she said fellow passengers and the families of those who died remained in her thoughts.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland said the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator was investigating the incident. A 24-year-old man remains in a critical condition at Townsville University Hospital along with three other men in a stable condition.
