Passengers arriving in Sydney from the Chinese city of Wuhan will be screened for coronavirus, which has already killed at least three people and infected hundreds. There are three direct flights per week between Wuhan and Sydney | rachelclun
Each of these flights will now be met by biosecurity staff, who will hand out information pamphlets and ask passengers if they are experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, breathlessness and sore throat.
Airlines had already declared "a number" of ill passengers who had been assessed as potential coronavirus cases, but none had been confirmed.Professor Murphy said the decision to rely on self disclosure was based on evidence that screening passengers by taking their temperature at the border was "ineffective" and gave people a "false sense of security", saying the virus had an incubation period of one week.
The new coronavirus has also spread to more Chinese cities, with two cases reported in the capital Beijing and one in Shenzen.
