Comment: Patricia Karvelas had Barnaby Joyce on the air and on the ropes
Unless you count the time I wrote about my waters breaking 90 minutes before the birth of my third child or my late-onset swimming lessons, I don’t write about water.
The entire water buyback story, dubbed #watergate on Twitter, is made more thrilling because of the way in which Australia’s enthusiasm for Barnaby Joyce has declined even more quickly than our rainfall. But it’s become compelling for another reason. It's become a linchpin for social media attacks on journalists.
Let me say a couple of things straight away before you rush to your keyboards to accuse me of being a shill for anyone in defending Karvelas.1. The abuse was a metonym for social media feeling that there was a conspiracy not to cover Watergate 2019, yet2. "Someone" tweeting about "something" is not necessarily proof it happened or is true.
