Patti recalled Bert’s “fighting spirit”, citing one day when he was sitting, upset, in his wheelchair.
She said Bert told her: “I just want to know whether I’ve been a good person and whether you think I’ve done an okay job of all of this.’ “And I had to say to him ... I don’t know anyone else that would have handled having a leg amputated and being unable to move and not being able to go anywhere.”“I was so proud of him because, to be honest, he was able to find joy.
Bert Newton had one of the biggest personalities on Australian television, and one of the most recognised faces.“I mean his biggest excitement was; I go in every morning and I say, ‘How are you?’“You’ve got to admire that - I think it’s finding the best out of nothing really.”The 77-year-old recalled the special ways her grandchildren remember their pop, Bert, who was affectionately known as “Moonface”.“We look up at the moon and there is his face,” she said of her grandkids.
