A former deputy mayor who killed his elderly mother almost six years ago has been found guilty of her murder after a jury rejected his mental impairment defence.

Paul Cohrs , 64, was charged over the fatal shooting of his 81-year-old mother Bette Cohrs-Schulz who died at her home at Red Cliffs , in north-west Victoria, on October 30, 2018.
During the seven-day trial, the jury heard that Cohrs's relationship with his brother and their mother soured due to ongoing disputes about money and the family business, which escalated to civil proceedings in 2015. The court heard Raymond pleaded: "No Paul, No Paul," before Cohrs shot him twice and he fell to the ground.He then walked up to his brother and asked: "Have you had enough pain yet?" and shot him in the torso and head.
Defence witness Dr Prashant Pandurangi testified that Cohrs had suffered from a "quite significant" delusional disorder and a depressive disorder, believing that his mother and brother were conspiring to physically and psychologically harm him. He pointed to instances of planning and reasoning, including that Cohrs had told Mr Fernandez he would not hurt him and that he should not look at Raymond's dead body, that the accused contacted police after shooting Mrs Cohrs-Schulz, and that he had expressed concern for the welfare of the great-grandchild.
