Paul O'Grady's widow Andre Portasio has detailed the heartrenching moment he found his partner on the day of his death, recalling how they were having the 'most ordinary day' before his world crumbled
As it nears a year since Paul O'Grady's tragic death, his widow, Andre Portasio, has spoken out, for the first time, to give his heart-wrenching account of the moment he found his partner in their home.
Recalling the moment he found Paul in their kitchen, Andre told Tom Bryant of The Mirror: "He left to get some tea, and I heard this loud bang. But because the house is big and old, I didn’t think of anything at first.” Explaining that he was frozen with shock, Andre desperately tried to save Paul's life. “He had a cut on his forehead, and I thought he was probably just unconscious. I called the ambulance and they said the best chance to keep him alive was to do CPR.”
Speaking at the event, he said: “I have kept myself to myself since Paul died. This is the first day that I actually left home,” he said. “But I came here for a good cause. Paul is a trailblazer and always defended LGBT rights. I just had to be here.”
