Houston to keep part of Main Street closed for outdoor seating with hopes to expand idea citywide
City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to permanently extend the. First approved as a pilot in November 2020, the initiative converted portions of Main Street’s vehicle lanes between Commerce Street and Rusk Street into seating areas for bars and restaurants struggling amid the early days of the pandemic when residents had been urged to remain in their homes to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“We definitely want to expand this once we get the permanent version up and going,” he said. “This is not something we would ever impose. This is something that we really want a commercial strip, possibly a group of businesses near each other, to see this downtown as an example and say, ‘Yeah, we would like to do that. Can you help work with us on that?’”
One participating business, Flying Saucer Draught Emporium at 705 Main St., spent around $20,000 on its patio setup featuring 10 tables, according to Joshua Justice, the company's social media director. It recouped the expense within six months, he said. “While I don't know that the Main Street project saved anybody from COVID, I think that if it had been in place prior to COVID, it probably would have,” he said. “We 100% support making it permanent.”Miriam Carrillo, co-owner of Main Street's Little Dipper Bar, said the outdoor drinking area was crucial for her business's survival in the past few years.
