Screen Rant and other media outlets spoke to TheLastOfUs stars bellaramsey & Pedro Pascal about working with Neil Druckmann, Ellie's origins, and how Joel compares to TheMandalorian.
The Last of Us takes place in a post-fungal pandemic world where the majority of the population has been wiped out by a mutated fungus that continues to spread and kill the few people who remain alive. The Last of Us follows Joel, a gruff smuggler tasked with transporting Ellie, a fourteen-year-old girl, across the decimated and dangerous United States. While the two are initially weary of each other, they slowly begin to care for one another, leading to an even more treacherous journey.
Bella Ramsey: Neither of us are particular gamers, so we hadn't. Before I got the audition, I hadn't played it or seen any of it. I did watch some gameplay because I don't have a console in order to play the game. I watched some of it, and it was pretty cool. I could see immediately why everyone loves it so much. I still haven't played it; it's sitting at home, waiting for me to play. But even without playing it, just being in the world of it, I'm obsessed with it.
Bella Ramsey: Hmm, good question. I do like the fact that we get to find out more about her and where she comes from and how she ended up here. I love the fact that the story of her and Riley is told as part of the show because I know that was separate and left behind. I love that [it's] incorporated, and I think that's a real driving force. The Riley story is a really driving force for Ellie, and it has happened three weeks before we initially meet her in the first episode.
Pedro Pascal: You know what was weird? I'm going to say this, and I don't know if I'm answering your question. But having Neil direct an episode, surprisingly he was the most open and excited about interpretation that wasn't his own. He was the one that was way more into the questions and the not knowing in terms of what our takes were. And I found that really, really surprising and exciting.
Pedro Pascal: It was the physical landscape of Alberta that was also so much of the visual experience of the show. And in the game I imagine that there's so much nature and surprising beauty to the end of civilization in a way, and for nature to win in this way. And to be able to use the physical locations of where we were for the whole year, and in each of its seasons, was pretty amazing.
Pedro Pascal: Not only that, but they were happening simultaneously as well. It's an amazing double dip for me. And I think that there are really, really strong comparisons in terms of their journeys and their relationships. With Joel, I think it was a really fascinating opportunity to discover elements from the source material, from Craig's and Neil's pages, from our locations, our sets and our effects; being with Bella all the time.
