The US House Speaker has told Taiwan’s parliament that her visit has bipartisan support at home.
| US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday pledged that the United States would not abandon Taiwan, reaffirming American support for the democratically elected government in Taipei despite fresh threats of military action by Beijing.
Her trip has infuriated Beijing, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory, and has repeatedly warned it views the visit as a provocative act. Ms Tsai, for her own part, said Ms Pelosi’s visit showed strong support for Taiwan in the face of a years-long international pressure campaign led by Beijing. “Facing deliberately heightened military threats, Taiwan will not back down,” Ms Tsai said, after conferring an award on the visiting US lawmaker.
China’s military exercises involving live ammunition are similar to actions taken by Beijing in the last major Taiwan crisis in 1996. The Taiwanese government is bracing itself for a repeat of the missile tests at that time that saw missiles landing in waters off Taiwan and at least one almost directly over Taipei.
