If President Xi Jinping decides to get back at the US by helping Putin in his crusade against the West, that would be bad news for Washington, Brussels and Kyiv, writes strategic policy analyst Professor Alexey Muraviev.
A violent clash between the US and the People’s Republic of China, a major power with ambitious aspirations of global domination, was narrowly avoided.
Russian President Vladimir Putin should consider giving Pelosi an award of some sort, similar to the one she received during her Taiwan visit in recognition of “America’s strong and enduring friendship.” To date, the overt support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine was limited to a charismatic collection of autocracies and dictatorships such as North Korea, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Cuba, Belarus – to name a few.
There is also an ongoing risk Putin may push Lukashenko to openly join the war by invading western Ukraine. Returning to the issue of Taiwan, it is clear the war in Ukraine served as important context to Pelosi’s visit. Xi’s renewed support for Putin would be a form of payback against Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky for scrapping the Motor Sich deal.Chinese soldiers marching in formation during a military parade in Tiananmen Square in Beijing on September 3, 2015, to mark the 70th anniversary of victory over Japan and the end of World War II.
