It was banned in 2019 after a series of earth tremors at Cuadrilla’s Preston New Road site near Blackpool

Residents in Pendle have said they will fight any local plans for natural gas fracking following the government’s ending of a moratorium, some borough councillors have claimed.

His motion stated: “Council [elected councillors] note the taxpayer-funded price guarantee for energy supply companies announced by the government; the Prime Minister’s commitment to ‘end the moratorium on extracting our huge reserves of shale’ and her refusal to implement a windfall tax on energy producers.

“The reason Richter levels are set as they are is because fracking involves drilling down and putting pipelines into rock. Seismic underground events could disrupt that process and create pollution in water and pollution from fossil fuels, which should remain in the ground. This lifting of the moratorium will not do a single thing to reduce the risks of energy shortages or to keep prices down,” he claimed.

Labour Coun Zafar Ali said: “Lancastrians have fought against the likes of Cuadrilla regarding fracking. My ward has some ideal conditions for this company to explore shale gas. However, the good people of Pendle will come out to fight these proposals. “There are huge resources under the ground. Let’s get the facts rather than scaremonger. That’s why the government has had a moratorium, to get the facts. I grew up on the Fylde coast and it might not be right [for fracking]. But we need the facts.
